Mikel Arteta ‘made a mistake’ letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang join Barcelona, claims Gabby Agbonlahor as Arsenal struggle for goals and could miss out on Champions League football

Mikel Arteta has been questioned for letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leave Arsenal to join Barcelona.

The manager and club’s former striker had a falling out in December 2021, which saw the player frozen out of the first-team before he left to join the Catalonian side.

Arteta has been told he made an error in handling Aubameyang’s situation, which could now prove to be costly

Aubameyang is having a ball in Spain having scored eight goals in nine LaLiga games so far

Initially, the decision to let the Gabon captain leave appeared to be a right one, as Arsenal were winning games and producing good performances without him.

But that has not been the case of late, as the Gunners are now struggling for form and results.

In the last three Premier League games, Arteta’s side have failed to pick up a single point, and have slid down the table from fourth to sixth.

The biggest reason for this is the lack of goals, with Arsenal having only found the net once in those three games – a deflected effort against Brighton.

And to highlight how much they’ve struggled in front of goal, on loan midfielder, Lucas Torreira, who operates as a defensive midfielder, has scored more goals in his last three games for Fiorentina – two.

It’s a worrying situation for the Gunners, but not one that they cannot overturn, as they still have seven games left in the league.

With that said, unless Arsenal can start to score goals with regularity again, they will undoubtedly struggle to finish fourth.

And speaking on talkSPORT’s GameDay – Your Verdict, Gabby Agbonlahor said that he believes Gunners boss Arteta will rue letting Aubameyang depart.

“They’ve let Aubameyang go for free, and he’s out there at Barcelona scoring goals,” the former Aston Villa striker said.

“So if Arsenal don’t get top four, for me, the problem is that Arteta made a mistake letting him go.

Aubameyang recently got his first taste of El Clasico, and he certainly enjoyed it, scoring twice and providing an assist in a 4-0 win against Real Madrid

“Yes they had a falling out, but you’ve let a goal scorer go, free of charge, to Barcelona.

“And you can’t score, Smith Rowe is still a young player, Martinelli’s still young, Saka’s still young, they’re going to have stages where they’re not bang at it.

“And Arsenal’s bench, players like Pepe, are not good enough to come in and help the young lads.

“So for me Arsenal are going to regret letting Aubameyang go and not replacing him.

Arsenal have scored 45 goals in the league so far, only Wolves and Brighton have prodcued fewer in the top half of the table

“I don’t want to hear that their keeperwas outstanding and ‘we should have scored’. Put the ball in the back of the net.

“You sold Aubameyang for nothing and let him go, and he would have scored a chance [in that game].”
